On the sidelines of the Inspire Luxury Hospitality Conference in Las Vegas, we had the privilege of speaking with Sam Bakhshandepour, CEO of the José Andrés Group. Articulate, warm, and deeply passionate, Sam shared his remarkable journey from Wall Street to the heart of the hospitality industry, his enduring love for food and service, and his unwavering commitment to investing in people.
A Career Pivot Fueled by Passion
Sam’s path to hospitality wasn’t a straight line. He began his career with JP Morgan on Wall Street, where he managed major clients in the gaming and hospitality industries. Spending time in the boardrooms of mega-casino companies, he observed firsthand how guest experience was a top priority.
But the finance world wasn’t where his heart lay. “Food and beverage, hospitality, the experience base—it’s my hobby,” Sam admitted with a smile. “I joke that I don’t golf; I eat and drink professionally. Even on family vacations, I’m planning breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hospitality creates memories and serves others, and that’s what drew me in.”
His career pivot began when he left Wall Street to join a restaurant and nightlife company, where he first worked with renowned chef José Andrés. Their collaboration deepened as Sam put together an investment group to support José’s brand. Years later, he officially joined the José Andrés Group as CEO, where he now leads with vision, humility, and a deep belief in the power of hospitality.
A Mission to Change the World Through Food
At the heart of the José Andrés Group is a powerful mission: to change the world through the power of food. For guests, this means creating unforgettable, experiential dining moments that resonate long after the meal. But for the team, or “partners” as Sam calls them, this mission extends further—to deliver meaningful, fulfilling careers.
“Building careers is everything,” Sam said passionately. “Our partners, not just employees, are the heart and soul of our company. We want them to see hospitality as a long-term career, not just a transitional role.”
He shared inspiring stories of team members who started in entry-level roles—dishwashers, servers, food runners—and grew into leadership positions. One senior chef transitioned into IT because it aligned with his passion. “These are the stories we promote,” Sam said. “We want people to come here, build careers, and even have their children work for the company one day. That’s what gives me the most pride.”
The Secret to Success: People with Character
When asked about the secret to his personal and professional success, Sam’s answer was immediate and heartfelt: “Surround yourself with the most incredible, talented, and full-of-character people you can. It starts with character and talent. If I walk into a room and I’m the dumbest guy there, I know I’ve done something right.”
This philosophy extends to his belief in diversity of thought and experience. “Having diverse perspectives and life experiences is everything. It’s what drives innovation and creativity,” he emphasized.
A True Believer in José Andrés
Throughout the interview, it was clear how deeply Sam believes in his partner, José Andrés. “I invested in José’s brand before I became CEO because I believed in him,” Sam said. “His vision, his commitment to changing the world through the power of food—it’s extraordinary. I’m honored to help bring that vision to life.”
Hospitality: A Responsibility and a Joy
For Sam Bakhshandepour, hospitality is both a responsibility and a joy. “The best, most valuable time people have—they give it to us,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to make those moments memorable, authentic, and meaningful.”
As CEO of the José Andrés Group, Sam is redefining what it means to lead in hospitality—building careers, fostering innovation, and creating experiences that last a lifetime. His story is a testament to following one’s passion and leading with heart.
